Course structure

The degree track is structured as an interdisciplinary course of study, combining social theoretical approaches with practical modules in design. Basics of the degree course include:

  • Practical analysis of social and media processes
  • Critical analysis of individual reality constructions
  • Learning and application of design methods
  • Design and development of visual concepts
  • Developing bilingual language skills (English Second Language)
  • Developing technical and academic skills
  • Developing social competence

This degree track is divided into a foundation course (three semesters) and main degree studies (five semesters). After the third semester, students reflect on the study objectives up to that point and will discuss possible career options based on their work thus far. Those that successfully pass the pre-examination will be admitted to the main degree studies (Hauptstudium). These are organized into "project classes" and are conceived as an open laboratory for thinking and experimentation combined with practical application. Complex assignments are given in blocks every 8 weeks and are conducted and completed in interdisciplinary teams that accompany students through the entire process, from the concept to production. Computer scientists, attorneys, architects, philosophers and sociologists play a major role in the work groups and challenge the team to develop innovative solutions. The analysis and differentiation of social issues and the critical evaluation of applied media is as much a part of performance requirements as the individual development of social skills and competences.
